The annual Valea Lânii Autumn Festival was supposed to be a celebration of harvest and heritage.
Instead, thanks to an aggressive combination of three-year-old oak-barreled țuică and pure, unadulterated city ignorance, it became the site of the greatest agricultural misunderstanding in Romanian history.
It all started when Mihai, a high-earning software developer from Bucharest, decided to visit his country cousins, Gică and Vasile. Mihai arrived wearing pristine designer hiking boots and a smart watch that tracked his stress levels. By 9:00 PM, after Gică had poured him four glasses of "the transparent medicine," Mihai was boasting that his grandfather had been a farmer, meaning farming was "in his DNA."
Gică, squinting through a cloud of cigarette smoke, saw an opportunity.
"You know, Mihai," Gică said, leaning in conspiratorially. "The mayor is offering a prize of 500 Euros to anyone who can successfully perform a 'Midnight Milking' of our village prize-winner. The milk is used for a special ceremonial cheese."
"A milking contest? Please. It’s just mechanical hand movements," Mihai scoffed, his smart watch buzzing to warn him his heart rate was rising. "Which animal?"
"That one over there," Vasile chimed in, pointing toward a dark, heavily reinforced wooden pen at the edge of the festival grounds. Inside stood Vasilică.
Vasilică was not a cow. Vasilică was a two-ton, black-furred, prize-winning Romanian Simmental BULL. He had a brass ring through his nose, neck muscles thicker than an old oak tree, and a temperament that could best be described as "actively looking for an excuse to destroy property." Because of the dark and the țuică, Mihai just saw a large, horned silhouette.
"Consider it done," Mihai announced, grabbing a shiny tin bucket from the fence.
The village elders, realizing what was about to happen, quietly gathered around the pen, holding their breaths and their drinks.
Mihai climbed over the wooden slats with the unearned confidence of a man who had just successfully deployed a new app. "Hey there, girl," Mihai cooed, stepping into the mud. "Let’s get that ceremonial cheese started."
Vasilică the bull turned his massive head. He blinked once. He didn't move. He was genuinely confused. For five years, people had brought him cows, carrots, or heavy chains. Nobody had ever approached him with a shiny bucket and a soft, urban voice.
Mihai knelt in the dark muck, placed the bucket directly beneath the bull's underbelly, and reached out.
The instant Mihai’s cold, software-developer hands made contact with Vasilică’s anatomy, the universe shifted.
Vasilică let out a roar that sounded like a jet engine backfiring. The bull didn't just kick; he flexed his entire lower body, sending Mihai’s tin bucket rocket-launching straight into the night sky, where it dented the roof of the village cultural center.
"Oh, she’s a kicker!" Mihai yelled, scrambling backward on his hands and knees through the mud as Vasilică began to furiously paw the ground, throwing clods of dirt into the air.
"Wrong angle, Mihai! You have to be more firm!" Gică shouted from the safety of the fence, tears of laughter streaming down his face.
Mihai, driven by a mixture of adrenaline and alcohol, grabbed a second bucket. "I am a professional!" he screamed, lunging forward again like a rugby player. He grabbed ahold of whatever he could reach.
Vasilică had had enough. The bull executed a majestic, 180-degree spin, caught Mihai squarely with his massive flank, and launched the tech brother cleanly over the six-foot wooden fence. Mihai flew through the air and landed face-first into a giant, open vat of mămăligă (polenta) that the village women were preparing for the feast.
The festival went dead silent for a second, save for the sound of Vasilică snorting triumphantly in his pen. Then, the entire village erupted into deafening laughter.
Mihai sat up in the copper pot, covered from head to toe in steaming, yellow polenta, looking like a human corn-dog. His smart watch began to beep frantically, flashing a message: “Heavy workout detected. High stress. Seek medical attention.”
Gică walked over, handed Mihai a shot of țuică to wash down the polenta in his mouth, and patted him on the back. "Well, cousin, you didn't get any milk. But look on the bright side—you made the best-dressed mămăligă in the whole county!"
Mihai never spoke about his agricultural DNA again, and to this day in Valea Lânii, if you do something incredibly stupid, the locals will ask if you're "going out to milk the bull."
