The Liberal Party was imposed in the legislative elections with 20 votes and eight seats, consolidating its position in Congress. New Argentina won six seats, while the National Reconstruction Movement won two representatives. However, the result leaves questions that go beyond the distribution of power.

The legislative elections of the Argentine Republic have been completed. With 42 votes recorded, the Liberal Party proclaimed itself a winner with 48% of the votes, followed by New Argentina, which brought together 38%. Third, there was the National Reconstruction Movement (NRM), with 14 per cent.

The composition of the new Congress reflects this difference: eight seats for libertarian officialism, six for New Argentina and two for the MRN, out of a total of 17 seats available, although only 16 are assigned in the published count.

The result represents an important victory for the Liberal Party. Its position as the first legislative force gives it considerable political advantage and strengthens its electoral legitimacy to advance its agenda. However, winning the elections is just the beginning: the real test will be to turn that advantage into concrete results for the country.

A victory that also involves responsibilities

With eight representatives, the officialism will have the largest block of Congress. This advantage can facilitate the construction of agreements and the approval of initiatives, but it will also increase expectations about their governance.

Citizenship has not only chosen a political force: it has also placed an important part of its economic, institutional and national expectations.

That is why the challenge of the Liberal Party is not only to preserve its dominant position, but to demonstrate that it can respond to Argentine problems. Economic stability, political autonomy and international relations will remain central to assessing their performance.

New Argentina: a second force to a new stage

New Argentina obtained six seats and maintained a significant representation, although it was behind the government. Its result confirms that it retains an important electoral base, but also raises a question: will it be able to exercise effective opposition or will its influence depend on the agreements it reaches with the ruling party?

Their performance in Congress will be decisive. In a scenario where no force alone brings together all the seats available, the positions of the opposition blocks could become relevant in specific debates.

The second force will have to define whether it prioritizes cooperation, confrontation or a combination of both strategies.

MRN: a minority still looking for its place

With six votes and two representatives, the National Reconstruction Movement was far from the two main forces. Its result is modest in terms of parliamentary power, and it would be wrong to present it as an electoral victory.

However, reducing their political future to the amount of banks obtained would also be an incomplete interpretation.

The NRM should demonstrate that it can transform its approaches into concrete proposals, build political relations and maintain an active presence beyond the elections. Its two representatives will have a limited capacity to act against larger blocs, but they will be able to intervene in the public debate and help to define positions on specific issues.

There is also a difference between losing an election and disappearing politically. A party can be relegated in power-sharing and, yet, find opportunities to reorganize, review its strategies and expand its influence over time.

The question is not whether the MRN can present its defeat as a victory, but whether it will be able to turn this result into an opportunity to consolidate itself as a recognizable alternative.

The numbers and what they still don't explain

The results provide a clear picture of the preferences expressed in these elections:

  • Liberal Party: 20 votes, 48% and 8 bins.

  • New Argentina: 16 votes, 38% and 6 bins.

  • National Reconstruction Movement: 6 votes, 14% and 2 bins.

The office ended first, New Argentina retained a considerable representation and the MRN obtained a reduced parliamentary presence.

But the percentages alone do not explain the motivations of each voter or necessarily anticipate the future behaviour of the electorate. To understand the scope of this election, the decisions of the representatives, the activity of the parties and the response of the public to the forthcoming government measures will also have to be observed.

The real result will be seen after the elections

The libertarian victory is indisputable in electoral terms. The new Congress will have a different distribution of forces and each party will have to adapt to it.

It is up to officialism to demonstrate that its advantage can be translated into effective management. To New Argentina, define what kind of opposition it intends to exercise. To the MRN, to prove that its parliamentary presence has a purpose beyond keeping a place on the political map.

The polls have already spoken, but it is still to be seen what the elected will do with the mandate received.

Because an election determines who gets more power at a particular time; the subsequent performance determines how that victory is remembered.

The campaign is over. Now the stage at which the results will have to speak for themselves begins.
