Statement by the Minister of Defence

Rome, 6/05/26

The Minister of Defence today reaffirmed the Italian Government’s position regarding the ongoing conflict, confirming that any Italian involvement would be exclusively defensive in nature and fully consistent with the Constitution, international law, and the country’s international commitments.

“Italy does not seek war and does not regard conflict as a means of resolving disputes between states,” the Minister declared. “Our objective remains the protection of national security, the safety of our citizens, and support for every diplomatic initiative aimed at promoting dialogue and peace.”

During the press conference, the Minister emphasized that his ministry does not support any military escalation and will continue to back all efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

“I believe that an aggressive attitude toward a war involving other countries can never be justified,” he stated. “The responsibility of institutions is to promote stability, prudence, and the search for peaceful solutions.”

The Minister also declared that, should the conflict continue in a direction incompatible with the principles of defence and moderation that he upholds, he would consider submitting his resignation.

“My conscience and my mandate require me to act at all times in the interests of peace and the defence of the country. If I were no longer able to pursue these principles, I would accept the political consequences of my convictions.”

The Ministry of Defence finally reaffirmed its commitment to working with national and international institutions to promote diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives aimed at ending hostilities and building a lasting peace.
