The resignation of Alexander Vucic. On September 27, the Serbian president announced his resignation. He explained that he wants to participate in early parliamentary elections (scheduled for October 25) as an ordinary citizen, and in the case of a victory of the ruling party – to apply for the post of Prime Minister. Presidential powers were temporarily transferred to Speaker of the National Assembly Ana Brnabic.
Meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. At the end of September (23–25), the Chinese president visited the United States for the first time in more than a decade. Following the talks, the parties extended the trade truce until January 10, 2027, to allow time for further dialogues. The leaders also discussed artificial intelligence (Xi Jinping stressed that the development of AI should remain under human control) and the “Thucydides trap” (the concept of the risk of confrontation between rising and dominant powers). Separately, China expressed hope that the United States would oppose Taiwan's independence.
The situation with financial assistance to Ukraine. In early October, it became known that the EU rejected Ukraine’s request for additional financial support for 2027 in the amount of 69 billion euros. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos noted that in order to continue assistance to Ukraine, it is necessary to implement previously agreed reforms.
The protests in Spain. In early October, mass actions were held in the country, including at the parliament. Protesters demanded action against tenant evictions and rising rents. After Congress rejected two government decrees on these issues, the tenant union called for more action and a general strike.
