Start of war
The date is etched in my memory, a brand seared onto the collective consciousness of Croatia: April 13th, 2025. That day, the drums of war, long muted to a distant rumble, erupted into a deafening roar. Bosnia, fueled by some unseen fire, declared war. We watched, stunned, as their forces crossed the border, their ambitions seemingly limitless.
Zadar Under Siege
Zadar was the first to fall, twice. Each time, the news crackled over the radio, a chilling echo in our homes. Fear, a bitter taste, filled our mouths. We huddled around maps, tracing the invaders' progress, desperate for news of resistance, of hope. The Croatian army, seasoned veterans of past conflicts, adopted a strategy of swift liberation. They were ghosts in the landscape, striking with precision and withdrawing before the enemy could truly solidify their hold. I remember the relief, sharp and sweet, when Zadar was freed the first time. We celebrated in the streets, flags waving, voices hoarse from cheering. But the joy was fleeting. Like a persistent nightmare, they returned, and the cycle of fear began anew.
The Shadow Over Zagreb
Then came the unthinkable. Zagreb, the heart of our nation, was breached. Panic seized the capital. I saw it in the faces of those fleeing south, their eyes wide with terror, their voices hushed with dread. The stories they carried painted a grim picture: streets turned into battlegrounds, the air thick with smoke and the stench of burning buildings. Yet, even in the face of such adversity, the spirit of Croatia refused to break. The army, like a coiled spring, struck with unparalleled force. The enemy, caught off guard, was pushed back, their advance shattered. Zagreb was ours again, bloodied but unbowed.
A War of Shadows
This is not a war of grand sieges and open battles. It is a war of shadows, of swift strikes and strategic retreats. Our army is a viper, striking with deadly accuracy and vanishing before the enemy can retaliate. We endure, clinging to hope, praying for an end to this nightmare. We are a nation forged in the fires of resilience, and we will not yield. We will survive. We must. The future of Croatia, the future of peace, depends on it.
