We begin with tamahagane, a high-quality steel produced from iron sand. Its purity is crucial for the blade's integrity.

2. Forging the Blade

  • Folding: The steel is heated and hammered, then folded upon itself repeatedly—often up to 16 times. This process removes impurities and enhances strength.
  • Shaping: The blade is drawn out to its desired length and curvature, a task that requires both precision and intuition.

3. Differential Hardening

 

 

A clay mixture is applied to the blade to control the cooling rate during quenching. This creates a hard edge and a softer spine, achieving the perfect balance of sharpness and flexibility.

4. Quenching

The blade is heated to a specific temperature and then quenched in water. This moment is critical—the slightest miscalculation can lead to failure.

5. Polishing and Finishing
