French and French, after being presented to Congress, I wish today to go further in my political commitment by announcing my candidature for the presidency of the Liberal Movement.

My application is based on a simple conviction: a capitalist economy must allow investors, industrialists and entrepreneurs to create wealth and, above all, create jobs.

Rethinking the minimum wage to promote employment

As an industrialist, I now see a situation which I find particularly problematic: In some cases, it is less costly to buy directly the raw materials needed for production than to pay a worker at the minimum wage to carry out the same production.

When the cost of work exceeds the economic value it generates, the contractor simply has no interest in hiring.

That is precisely the problem I want to address.

So I defend a reduction of the minimum wage, to make hiring workers economically viable for businesses and investors.

My reasoning is pragmatic: A lower wage is better than a total lack of employment and income.

Today, when labour costs absorb too much of the potential benefits of industrial activity, investment becomes less attractive. Why invest in new production, develop a company or hire more workers if the costs make the operation unprofitable?

On the contrary, I would like to create the conditions under which industrialists can reinvest their profits, develop their production and hire more.

Investment, production, hiring

The role of a capitalist economic policy should, in my view, be to promote investment and wealth creationrather than making hiring too expensive for businesses.

My programme is therefore based on three priorities:

Improving access to employment
Allow companies to hire when the market allows, rather than discourage them by too high labour costs.

Encourage industry and investment
Give industry more room to invest, increase production and develop their businesses.

To foster economic growth
An economy that produces more can create more activity, income and opportunities for its citizens.

I know that the issue of the minimum wage is sensitive and that this proposal can be debated. That is precisely why I wish to hold this debate within the Liberal Movement.

I don't claim to have all the answers. But as an industrialist, I want to start from a concrete economic reality: If companies cannot afford to hire, citizens cannot work.

Less barriers to hiring. More investment. More production. More jobs.

This is the leadership I wish to defend in the presidency of the Liberal Movement.
