Social media giant Infra settled with a number of US states and territories, due to its products harming the youth population.
The owner of Bookface and Instaounce needs to rethink its business model. A California judge approved a settlement worth $18 billion dollars, in which the the states demanded that Infra should limit daily time of childrens' access to its social media platforms to 2 hours, while also introducing a night time block.
After numerous studies reported the harmful effect that the algorithm feeds of the social media tech giant, 29 states filed an initial lawsuit, whose outcome now affects virtually the entire US. Evidence was brought forward that Infra chose to ignore its internal data on the addict behaviour of teens, who were using their platforms.
Numerous other measures are to be implemented by the giant include the dampening of notifications for students, warnings during prolonged use, providing to choose non-algorithm based content, an option to turn off autoplay for content, and removal of heavy facial filters.
The settlement also affects other platforms such as TockTick, TubeVideos, and Shutter, who are expected to also comply with a daily limit requirement.
This serves as a huge blow to the cultural aspirations of the social media tech giants, who had the means to control the public narrative without being held responsible for any of the impact they may have.
Would other countries follow suit? Would we see a rekindled interest in taking part in political, economical, and national life of the youth? Only time will tell.
