ELECTIONS 2026: OUR POSITION THROUGH THE SECOND TURN

Between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro, we declare our support for Lula

The elections of 2026 reached the second round.

After the first round was cleared, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Flavio Bolsonaro (PL) The Presidency of the Republic will compete. Lula finished the first round with 45.16% of the valid votes, while Flávio Bolsonaro obtained 47.03%.

O Communist Resistance publicly declares its position:

WE SUPPORT LULA AT SECOND TURN.

This decision does not mean that we consider Lula a communist candidate, nor that the PT represents the revolutionary project defended by this newspaper.

Our position is based on a concrete analysis of the situation.

WE DON'T CONFUND TACTICAL SUPPORT WITH IDEOLOGICAL SUPPORT

A Marxist newspaper needs to be able to differentiate two things:

political support in a specific conjuncture and ideological identification with a particular party.

The PT is not a Marxist-Leninist party.

The Lula government continues to function within the institutions of the capitalist state and an economy based on private property and wage labor.

Therefore, we do not believe that Lula's eventual victory means the arrival of socialism in Brazil.

Our position is different.

Between the two projects placed before the electorate in this second round, we consider that the candidacy Lula presents more favorable conditions for the defense of certain social and democratic policies that we consider important, while we see in the candidacy of Flávio Bolsonaro a political project that we consider incompatible with the objectives of our newspaper.

WHY DON'T I FLAUGH?

Our opposition to Flavio Bolsonaro is not based simply on the surname.

It is related to the political project that your candidacy represents.

Its program presents an economic orientation more focused on expenditure containment, including the proposal of cuts equivalent to 1.5% of GDP and a new expenditure ceiling. It also presents proposals for state reform and a concept of social protection linked to the transition to work, credit and heritage.

From the point of view Communist Resistance, we need to question a concept according to which the solution to social problems primarily involves reducing the role of the state and fiscal discipline.

For us, the fundamental question is:

Who should pay for the economic crisis?

We do not accept that workers and poor sectors are the first to suffer when the state needs to balance its accounts.

THE PROBLEM IS NOT JUST ECONOMIC

Our opposition also involves the democratic issue.

The Flavio Bolsonaro programme presents a strong defence of freedom of expression and promises to combat state structures that it considers forms of censorship. At the same time, his campaign went into court disputes involving content published by opponents and requests for the removal of publications on social networks.

This deserves to be critically monitored.

We don't stand for censorship.

But we also do not believe that freedom of expression should be examined only through electoral slogans.

We want political freedom for workers, students, unions, social movements, journalists and popular organizations.

Democracy must also be assessed by the ability of different sectors of society to organize and dispute the country's course.

Why LULA?

Our support for Lula is mainly part of a comparison.

Lula's program presents a more focused orientation to the maintenance and expansion of social policies, public investment, the valorization of work and the reduction of inequalities.

This does not turn these proposals into socialism.

But within the current situation, we consider these priorities closer to the immediate needs of the working class than a policy focused on austerity and state reduction.

The difference is important.

Defending Lula in this second round does not mean abandoning our criticisms of capitalism.

It means recognizing that the concrete living conditions of workers also matter in the electoral disputes.

WE DON'T GIVE OUR PROGRAMME TO EN

However, there is a fundamental condition for our support:

We do not give up political independence.

If Lula is elected, we will continue to criticize:

  • exploitation of work;

  • economic inequality;

  • income concentration;

  • precariousness;

  • high interest;

  • economic privileges;

  • influence of large capital on the State;

  • limits of social policies;

  • reconciliation between class interests.

A government does not automatically become progressive because it receives support from the left.

And a party does not become socialist because it has social policies.

The role of a communist organization is not to abandon its convictions to support a government. It's critical analysis of each government.

THE SECOND TURN IS NOT REVOLUTION

We need to be clear.

Neither of the two candidates represents the revolutionary project advocated by Communist Resistance.

The socialist transformation of society will not be accomplished simply by electing a president.

The emancipation of workers depends on organization, political awareness, social mobilization and transformation of economic and political relations.

The vote is just a part of the political struggle.

Therefore, our support for Lula does not mean saying:

"Now just elect Lula."

It means to say:

" Given the concrete alternatives of this second round, our analysis leads us to support Lula, maintaining our independence and our socialist perspective."

OUR POSITION IS CRITICAL

We do not want a government that simply administers poverty.

We want a society that eliminates the conditions that produce poverty.

We don't just want social programs.

We want economic transformation.

We don't just want formal rights.

We want effective participation of workers in the decisions that determine their lives.

We do not just want to alter governments.

We want social transformation.

That's why our position is simultaneously in favor of Lula in this second round and independent of lullism.

A CONCRETE CHOICE

Revolutionary politics cannot ignore concrete circumstances.

In an election with multiple applications, we can discuss different projects and defend the one we consider closest to our positions.

In the second round, however, the dispute is reduced to two alternatives.

It is in this context that Communist Resistance declares its support:

LUL 13

Not as a representative of socialism.

Not as a definitive solution to Brazilian problems.

Not as a substitute for the organization of workers.

But as the option we consider less distant from the social and democratic needs we defend before the alternative represented by Flávio Bolsonaro.

After the polls, regardless of the outcome, our task will remain the same:

study, organize and fight for the emancipation of the working class.
